We need to be at the Board meetings in June (9th and 23rd).
We need to get parents to the Board meetings in June.
Here is a summary of the Board study session.
YCUSD Board Meeting Thursday May 28, 2009
Governing Board Budget Priorities Study Session
Budget Priorities Committee had recommended restoring the following:
- Site-level administrators: 5 out of 6
- Lit coaches: 10.8 out of 11.8
- Elementary PE specialists: 3 out of 4
- Elementary Counselors: All
- Middle School/High School Counselors:
- Teachers- middle school/high school: 6 out of 12
- Teachers- K-3: none
All of these previously considered restorations are now questionable given the newest possible rounds of cuts from the state. These proposed restorations are an indication of the current priorities. Do you think they need to rethink them? ACT NOW. Get parents and colleagues to tell the Board.
Board members and Craig Guensler quoted the statements of principals that when asked to rank three priorities: lit coaches, assistant principals and counselors, counselors end up on the bottom of the list. Three principals were present at the meeting and were asked the same by a Board member. They selected either their assistant principals or lit coaches as critical in their support for teachers. Administrators seem to be suggesting that the best support model for teachers is lit coaches and assistant principals and thus rank this high on the list of priorities. There are board members that would like to hear from the classroom teachers. Please give them your opinion. What do you the classroom teacher believe is most important in supporting your work in the classroom with students. Tell our board members. Parents should also share their opinions. We need to share our input in June before the Board makes decisions at either the June 9th or 23rd board meetings.
The Board reviewed their four major goals and reaffirmed their support for these Board Goals.
1. 3rd Grade Reading. Increasing student proficiency demonstrated on ELA CST
2. Development of Career Pathways. Expanding student options and course work relevance
3. Restoration of elementary counselors.
4. Expansion of Student Wellness. Linked to elementary PE specialists
